New and exciting changes have occurred in the past year at Friedt Herefords. One thing we know that never changes is the quality that runs deep within our cow herd. Of course the other thing that never changes is the unpredictable weather in North Dakota. Calving was the coldest and snowiest on record. We along with neighbors suffered more losses than usual. Planting and haying saw above normal rain and below normal temperatures, leading to a below average small grain crop but the largest hay crop we have ever seen.
The cattle have performed well with outstanding calves by our home raised sires FH L1 Domino 695 MF and FH L1 Domino 902. We calved out our first 695 females this spring and they look to be all that we hoped for. Five daughters had an average weaning ratio of 110. We also have some outstanding calves by H5 001 Domino 819, HH Advance 7056T, and CJH Harland 408 that will be some sale favorites.
Our newest herd bull purchase is CL 1 Domino 849 at the recent Baker Hereford Ranch dispersal along with four females. We have partnered with Bruce Anderson of Valley City and Ron Thom of Spiritwood on 15 Baker Hereford Ranch females. We will use these females to diversify our bloodlines and continue to add to the maternal depth of the herd.
The biggest change in the coming year is that we will be hosting our own sale on February 9, 2012 at Stockmen’s West in Dickinson, ND. We are excited about this sale as we have been working for over 25 years developing a program based on highly maternal, performance oriented females. Look for deep quality throughout the sale bulls as well as replacement heifers.
